Slimline starter motors have an epicyclical gear box that sits behind the pinion. Extra torque is generated by a set of internal gears when the solenoid is triggered, throwing the pinion into mesh. "Slimline" starters were invented by Powerlite as an alternative to the off-set gear reduction starter and offer better fitting options where space is tight on an engine.
